Festus, Missouri - As Memorial Day approaches, veterans from across the nation are preparing to gather once again to commemorate the life and sacrifice of Army Specialist Christopher M. Katzenberger. Specialist Katzenberger, known affectionately as "Doc," made the ultimate sacrifice for his country on August 9, 2005, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee during convoy operations in Ghazni, Afghanistan.

Specialist Katzenberger, aged 25 at the time of his passing, was assigned to C Company, 2nd Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, based out of Fort Bragg, North Carolina, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. His bravery and dedication to duty were unwavering, and his loss was deeply felt by his comrades.

Since his tragic passing, the soldiers of Charlie Company 2/504 have honored Specialist Katzenberger's memory each Memorial Day. Their tribute extends beyond mere remembrance; it's a four-day celebration of his life, marked by camaraderie, reflection, and gratitude for his service.

The annual reunion, now in its tenth year, has become a cornerstone event for those who served alongside Specialist Katzenberger. Veterans from all corners of the country converge on the VFW in Festus, Missouri, to pay homage to their fallen brother and to reaffirm the bonds forged in the crucible of war.

The significance of this year's reunion is underscored by the efforts of the veterans to ensure that as many of Specialist Katzenberger's comrades as possible can attend. Recognizing that financial constraints may prevent some veterans from joining the reunion, the soldiers have established a reunion fund to provide assistance for travel expenses, lodging, and other needs.

Command Sergeant Major Jeffrey Brown, Ret., the senior non-commissioned officer of Charlie Company, will oversee the management of the funds. His commitment to ensuring that no veteran is left behind speaks to the ethos of brotherhood that defines the unit.

In addition to providing financial assistance to veterans, a portion of the funds raised will be allocated towards a memorial in honor of Specialist Katzenberger at the Festus VFW grounds. A plaque will also be awarded to the VFW Post in recognition of their unwavering support over the past decade.

For those unable to attend the reunion in person, there are still opportunities to show support. Donations to the reunion fund are welcomed and will directly impact veterans facing financial constraints, ensuring that all who wish to honor Specialist Katzenberger's legacy can do so.

The veterans of Charlie Company 2/504 Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, extend a heartfelt invitation to all who wish to join them in remembering, honoring, and celebrating the life of Specialist Christopher M. Katzenberger. Whether through attendance, donation, or simply spreading the word, every contribution makes a difference in preserving the memory of a true American hero.

As Memorial Day approaches, let us come together to ensure that the sacrifice of Specialist Katzenberger and all those who have served is never forgotten. Join us in honoring our heroes and reaffirming the bonds of camaraderie that unite us as a veteran community.
